Malcolm was born the first son to a family with long ties to the sea. His father had served as captain of one of his father’s ships that harassed the Spanish Armada as it sailed around Scotland after failing to invade England. Malcolm’s father had always planned for him to take over the family trading business thus he saw to it that Malcolm received a broad "education" in those areas which he would need in order to run the business. He learned about seamanship, diplomacy, sword play (from polished Frenchman named Aubrey and a rogue named Juan), military tactics, fine dining, literature and many other refinements while travelling the continent arranging contracts for his father’s ships.

Once while in France he had to come to the aid of a friend who was in the process of being swindled out of a considerable quantity of wine being shipped to England. In helping to "settle" the matter he wound up in possession of a small galleon named "RAPTOR". Thinking it would make a fine addition to his father’s fleet he found a crew and sailed her to Edinburgh to present her to his father. Upon arrival he learned that his father was dead and the business had fallen into the hands of treacherous competitor. With his future now in doubt he promised his mother that he would rebuild the business with the "RAPTOR" as the foundation.

For the next seven years he took the "RAPTOR" to many ports of call. Always looking to ship cargo that others thought was risky or was headed to trouble spots he slowly built enough money to begin building and buying ships for the fleet. A trusted cousin oversaw the business in Edinburgh while Malcolm sailed wide oceans. The "RAPTOR" has seen many adventures including two trips to the New World. She has been called pirate by some and valiant friend by others.

There finally reached a point where the demands of the business grew too much for his cousin to handle alone. He sailed back home and turned command of the ship over to Therese with the orders to carry in the best tradition of the ship. He then watched her sail to and disappear over the horizon.

He now spends his time coordinating the fleet and tending to his garden. He has also taken up the task of teaching the ways of the rapier to the skeptical populace of his home.
